How to prevent drowning accidents

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 14 years old.

There are many ways to prevent drowning accidents. First, never leave a child unattended near water, even for a moment. Second, provide close supervision when children are swimming or taking part in water activities. Third, make sure your home pool is securely fenced with a self-closing and self-latching gate. Fourth, learn CPR and keep a phone handy when children are swimming. Fifth, teach children to swim as early as possible. Sixth, have life jackets readily available whenever you are on or near the water with children, and make sure everyone knows how to use them properly. Seventh, avoid alcohol consumption when supervising children around water.

By following these simple tips, you can help prevent tragic drownings from happening to the people you love most.

What to do if you witness a drowning accident

If you witness a drowning accident, it is important to stay calm and call 911 immediately. Do not try to rescue the person yourself unless you are a trained professional. If you are unable to call 911, ask someone nearby to do so. Try to keep the person’s head above water and pull them towards the shore or side of the pool. If they are unconscious, carefully roll them onto their back and begin CPR if you are trained to do so.
